Blood+: One Night Kiss is an action-adventure video game developed by Grasshopper Manufacture for the PlayStation 2 console. It has only been published in Japan, where it was released on August 30, 2006. One Night Kiss was one of the first games Grasshopper worked on after finding fame from killer7, with which it shares the same art style. The game is set in the world of the anime series Blood+, and takes place after episode 7. It is written and directed by Goichi Suda, who applied the same punk philosophies to the game as he would to an original work.

PlotEdit

Set in the fictional town of Shikishi, most of the game is played from the perspective of Saya Otonashi, with occasional stints as Kou Aoyama, an original character created for One Night Kiss. Saya and the other characters are battling the Chiropterans, bat-like monsters. The Moon is a recurring symbol, used in the opening cutscene and during loading screens, fitting with the series' vampiric inspirations as well as the game's artistic similarities to killer7.

DevelopmentEdit

One Night Kiss was one of two Grasshopper PS2 games published by Namco Bandai set in the worlds of anime, the other being Samurai Champloo: Sidetracked. It was developed during the airing of the anime over a five month period, with the team having to develop it as they watched each episode. It was decided to be set after the seventh episode of the show due to a single day not being accounted for in the show's timeline at that point, with Suda deciding they should fill in that missing day. The planned ending, in which the Saya in the game is revealed to only be a Chriopteran clone of the show's Saya, before getting killed off, had to be removed, marking the first notable point in Grasshoppers history that a publisher had forced a major change upon the final product.

"There were points when the person in charge got angry at us. In our scenario protocol, Saya dies. But that's actually a clone. When I wrote it so that Kaname and Saya are Chiropterans, he got extremely angry and said, 'You can't kill the heroine!' Even though I told him, 'It's just a fake,' he still shot it down. He really got mad. Yeah, that's how it was. Leaving the game as it was in the original work wasn't an option; somehow, killing the heroine wasn't interesting. Well, they got mad." -Suda51 in The Art of Grasshopper Manufacture.
